My song leading journey began deep beneath the earth…

Summer of 2018, I was descending down a cave system, through narrow crevasses the body could barely squeeze past. Our group arrived at a great hollow, where the guide invited us to switch off all lights. “This is called the Cathedral, because of its haunting echoes. Would anyone like to sing?”

I sang a solo, yet it felt incomplete. Every fibre of my being craved the sound of harmonies, of voices coming together, which I had been experiencing in singing circles in London. I will never forget that yearning - I wish I could lead singing. But I didn’t know how to then.

Fast forward 5 months, in a 5-minute open mic in a start-up accelerator, I led an impromptu 3-part harmony with 40 voices. One minute of improvised singing completely lightened up the co-working space - as if we were all drunk with song. I have not seen these faces collectively beam so brightly.

Seeds were sown along the way. And I never stopped learning and growing from then. I am a keen student of circle singing, body music, música do círculo and other voice and movement methods. I bring to my singing sessions a focus on awareness and listening, and a deep respect and care for each one of our voices. The mindful gathering of our voices becomes a unique expression of human connection.
